What should you look for when buying an air rifle?
In the world of air rifles, the choice is overwhelming, ranging from lightweight models suitable for short distances to powerful rifles designed for precision shooting at long distances. Whether you are an avid target shooter or an experienced hunter looking for the perfect companion, choosing the right air rifle requires solid knowledge and attention to detail.
In this blog, we dive deeper into the essential considerations you need to make when buying an air rifle. From determining intended use to understanding technical specifications such as power sources and calibers, we will explore the key factors that affect the performance of an air rifle. So, whether you’re a beginner looking for your first air rifle or a seasoned shooter looking to expand your arsenal, let’s explore together what to look for in order to find the perfect air rifle that meets your specific needs and expectations.
What is the purpose of the air rifle
If you want to shoot targets at short distances, up to about 30 yards, a light rifle is more than adequate. In this case, for example, you would be fine with a rifle that has a power between 7.5 Joule and 16 Joule.
However, if you plan to shoot at longer distances, up to 100 yards or even beyond, we recommend considering at least a 40 Joule rifle. The power of a rifle is often expressed in Joules. However, it is important to note that more power does not always equal better performance. While a rifle may produce a high number of Joules, that does not automatically mean it will shoot better or more accurately. At Wapenhandel Colenbrander, we have only included rifles in our assortment that have been proven to be accurate in practice.
Different types of air rifles
There are different types of air rifles with different power sources. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these models?
Spring rifle
Traditionally, the air rifle is often powered by a spring, resulting in what we know as a spring rifle. The distinctive feature of the spring rifle is its self-sustaining system: by breaking and closing the rifle, the air rifle is cocked. This means you don’t need an air tank or CO2 cartridges, making the spring rifle an easy-to-use option. Today’s powerful spring rifles can reach impressive energy levels, up to 45 Joule, allowing pellets to reach speeds of up to 380 meters per second. A velocity that may be too powerful for backyard shooting or knocking over cans, making a rifle with a 7.5 joule capacity more appropriate.
So the advantage of a spring rifle is its self-contained system, which makes it very easy to use. However, if you want to add accessories to your air rifle, consider several matching options (click here). The only drawback a spring rifle sometimes brings, especially with the heavier models, is a relatively harsh recoil. If you prefer a rifle without recoil, perhaps a choice of a PCP or CO2 air rifle would be more appropriate.
Advantages of a spring rifle:
- Self-sufficient system: no air tank or CO2 cartridges required.
- Very powerful, up to 45 Joule.
- Easy to use.
Disadvantages of a spring rifle:
- Relatively harsh recoil, especially on the heavier models.
Gasram air rifle
A gas ram air rifle follows the same principle as a spring rifle, but instead of a metal spring, it uses a gas spring. Whereas the spring of a spring rifle can warp over time, leading to loss of power, a gas spring rifle does not suffer from this. This results in a longer life of the gas ram air rifle. In addition, the use of a gas spring provides a cleaner shot image, as gas springs produce less vibration compared to traditional spring systems. This not only extends the durability of the rifle but also improves shot accuracy.
Advantages of a gas ram air rifle:
- Longevity.
- Pure shot image.
- Quieter and less vibration.
Disadvantages of a gas ram air rifle:
- No drawbacks
Thus, the gasram air rifle offers not only technological advantages in terms of longevity and accuracy, but also a quieter and low-vibration shooting experience.
PCP air rifle
If you are looking for the ability to accurately shoot groups at longer distances, then a PCP air rifle, or compressed air rifle, may be the ideal choice for you. This type of air rifle is powered by compressed air from the rifle’s air tank. With each shot, this air tank is briefly opened, pushing the bullet out of the barrel. A PCP rifle particularly excels at distances of 50 to 100 yards, making it an excellent choice for shooters who want to improve their precision and shooting technique.
The advantage of a PCP rifle lies in its impressive accuracy, plus it has virtually no recoil, since there is no spring that moves abruptly forward. PCP rifles are often equipped with a magazine, allowing you to place several shots in quick succession. The only disadvantage of a PCP rifle is its dependence on an air cylinder, which you can usually fill at local dive stores or fire stations. Alternatively, you can fill the air bottle yourself using a scuba tank or a compressor. It is important to note that an ordinary home, garden and kitchen compressor is not sufficient, as they usually have a working pressure of up to 12 bar. You need a compressor with a working pressure of up to 200 bar.
Advantages of PCP rifles:
- Great for shooting at distances from 50 to 100 meters.
- Accurate and virtually no recoil.
- Features a magazine for fast sequential shots.
Disadvantages of PCP rifles:
- Dependence on an air bottle that must be filled regularly.
Co2 air rifle
The Co2 rifle, as the name suggests, is powered by a Co2 cartridge. This type of air rifle shares the accuracy of a PCP rifle, albeit up to the point where the pressure in the cartridge becomes too low, which can result in deviations. In general, a Co2 rifle is somewhat less powerful, making it ideal for use at shorter distances. A notable advantage is that you don’t have to break this rifle to load, which opens up the possibility of using a magazine. This not only improves precision, but also makes it ideal for sequential shots. However, it is important to note that with repeated rapid shooting with a Co2 rifle, the O-rings can freeze, which can eventually lead to damage.
Want to know more about Co2 rifles? Here you will find all the information and a select range of Co2 rifles, where you can buy a Co2 rifle directly.
Benefits of Co2 rifles:
- Inexpensive and tremendous ease of use.
- Suitable for shorter distances: ideal for indoor or garden use.
- Ability to place multiple shots in succession.
- Easily made even quieter with muffler.
Disadvantages of Co2 rifles:
- Less powerful.
Overall, the Co2 rifle offers an affordable and easy-to-use option for shooters primarily at shorter ranges, with added benefits such as the ability to fire multiple shots quickly and the ability to reduce noise levels with a silencer.
